AMERICAN CAPITAL INCREASES DIVIDEND 10% TO $0.57 PER SHARE

Bethesda, MD - October 25, 2001 - American Capital Strategies Ltd. (Nasdaq:ACAS) announced today its Board of Directors has declared a fourth quarter 2001 dividend of $0.57 per share, payable on December 31, 2001 to record holders as of December 12, 2001. This dividend is a 10% increase over the fourth quarter 2000 regular dividend of $0.52 per share. American Capital has paid and declared $7.67 in dividends since its August 1997 IPO.
